web hosting cyber crime

"Cyber-criminals and Internet miscreants use Fast Flux web hosting to frustrate anticrime efforts aimed at locating and shutting down web sites used for illegal purposes. Fast flux hosting supports a wide variety of cyber-crime activities (fraud, identity theft, online scams) and is considered one of the most serious threats to online activities today. One variant of fast flux hosting, "double flux", exploits the domain name registration and name resolution services.

"SAC 025 describes the technical aspects of fast flux hosting and fast flux service networks and explains how the DNS is exploited to abet criminal activities that employ fast flux hosting. The Advisory discusses current and possible methods of mitigating fast flux hosting at various points in the Internet and identifies those methods that SSAC considers practical and sensible.

"SSAC asks that the CCNSO consider measures and best practices enumerated in SAC 025 and how these might be incorporated into standard operating procedures or future policies. While these measures alone cannot eliminate fast flux hosting, they can greatly improve the overall Internet security baseline if implemented broadly and uniformly."

Please see ICANN.org's web hosting press release for more details.

XXX Top Level Domain Denied

XXX tld has beeen denied by ICANN once again.

Blair Lowe, CEO of Computer Engineering Inc., dicsussed this in an interview with Mike Blanchard of CHQR radio in Calgary, Alberta this afternoon.

"The whole problem with the proposal is that one company will gain control of the pornographic industry.", says Lowe. "If there was a non-for-profit organisation that allowed multiple registrars to register the domain names, then there would be less of a monopoly".

Lowe and Blanchard agreed that it would be nice if we could reduce accidental visits to pornographic sites by children.

Greedy SCO Launches Law Suit Against Linux Vendors

SCO will announce a lawsuit against two linux vendors later today. An excellent extensive summary of this can be read at zdnet. Basically SCO contends that it purchased UNIX from Novell, and in doing so it has all prior rights to any software that was ever developed that is remotely like UNIX ie. LINUX. In particular, SCO is accusing several "include" files to be violating the copyright that it purchased.

The previous owner of UNIX, Novell, on the other hand, is arguing that prior agreements to allow the use of code are not touchable by SCO, and that SCO does not have exclusive rights to the UNIX operating system.

The hilarious part of this, is that the files that SCO refers to have been a part of the LINUX operating system for years before they purchased the purported "rights" to UNIX, and in spite of these files being openly available on LINUX since the 2.2 Linux kernel (late 1999), these files were never to this point, reported to be violating any UNIX copyrights, and were consented by the copyright owners of UNIX as Novell now contends. In essence, SCO is saying that "you gave them our property before we owned it".

Computer Engineering Inc.'s CEO Lowe contends that "also a great part of this whole debate is that it is a huge debate that will only increase the exposure on Linux, and reduce the credibility of companies and company executives like those at SCO".
